I really wanted to wear eyeliner but when I did try I looked like I had 2 black eyes even wearing ‘smudge-proof” eyeliner. I am getting older (so I need all the help I can get) so I decided to get permanent eyeliner. A co-worker of mine had it done years ago so I went to her for questions and a referral. Here are the results!
p.s. my before and after lighting pictures were in different lighting so I tried to ‘even’ the lighting out as best as I could.
Q and A’s
1.) Can you go blind?
I guess. There are risks to getting permanent make-up. Most risks are allergic reactions to pigmentation and infection. Also, there is always a risk of tattoo pigmentation causing issues if you were to ever need an MRI. I am not the professional in this area but you need to know the risks and do a risks/benefits analysis for yourself. In my case, I was confident that the person doing my eyeliner was a competent, experienced professional.
2.) Does it hurt?
Yes. They did use Lidocaine topical ointment but it is getting a tattoo on your eyelids people so it is not pleasant.
3.) How long does it take?
This will vary. My eyes were very watery during the session so we had to stop some but in all it took about 3 hours.
4.) Are you afraid they would mess up?
Of course. You should have a nice understanding of what you want your eyeliner to look like and pictures to convey this to the artist.
5.) Can you see afterwards?
6.) What is the hardest or most painful part?
For me the most painful part was about 12 hours after the tattoo (see picture below). I was really swollen and tender. I put ice over a wash cloth and iced my eye which helped. Eventually, I took some Tylenol and went to bed and felt fine in the morning.
The hardest part for me was that you had to keep your eyes open during the tattoo and look up. (yes you HAVE to… hello tattoo gun) My eyes are sensitive to light so this made them water a lot.
7.) Do you like the results? Would you do it again?
Yes! and Yes!
8.) How much did it cost?
I did both upper and lower eyelids and it was $500 (+ tip).
9.) How long does it take to heal?
Just like any tattoo, it takes a couple of weeks to heal.
I asked for black eyeliner at first. She nudged me away from black because black can start to look blue with fading and depending on the pigmentation. I went for brown with a touch of black pigmentation.
